The box above is the shared FontFancy generator opened on the flip-friendly styles. Type anything, tap a row to copy it, and the page below explains which letters flip cleanly, which ones are borrowed from other alphabets, and where flipped text stops working.

Unicode blocks: there is no upside-down alphabet — the flipped letters are borrowed mainly from IPA Extensions (U+0250–U+02AF, e.g. ɐ ǝ ɥ ɯ ɹ ʇ ʎ), Latin Extended-B and a few maths and letterlike symbols such as ∀ (U+2200) and Ⅎ (U+2132).

How flipping really works

Upside-down text is made in two steps: each letter is swapped for a character that looks like it turned over, and then the whole string is written backwards. The second step matters because a rotated line is read from the other end.

StepResultWhat changed
1. TypeEmmaPlain letters
2. Swap each letterƎɯɯɐE→Ǝ, m→ɯ, a→ɐ
3. Reverse the orderɐɯɯƎRead with the screen turned

Most lowercase swaps are real phonetic letters that happen to be turned versions of the Latin ones — ɐ is Latin Small Letter Turned A, ǝ is Latin Small Letter Turned E, ʎ is Latin Small Letter Turned Y. They exist because linguists needed them in the International Phonetic Alphabet, which is why lowercase flips look natural. Capitals and digits were never given a full turned set, and that is where the trouble starts.

Letters that cannot flip cleanly

Out of the 69 characters our flip style maps, 13 letters and digits are simply left as they are, and the 16 below have no true turned form. They are stand-ins: some borrowed from maths, Greek, Cyrillic, Deseret, Canadian Syllabics, Hangul or Bopomofo, others unrelated Latin letters or tone marks that happen to look right. The borrowed ones are the characters most likely to show as an empty box on an older phone.

Left unchanged: l, o, s, x, z, H, I, N, O, S, X, Z, 8. Some of these are already symmetric when turned (o, s, x, z, H, I, N, O, S, X, Z, 8). The lowercase l is the odd one out: Unicode does have Latin Small Letter Turned L (ꞁ), but many fonts lack it, so the tool keeps a plain l rather than risk a box. Letters with accents such as é or ñ and most punctuation beyond ? ! . , ( ) [ ] are also passed through unflipped, so check them before you send.

Flipped phrases to copy

Short messages already turned over. Each one is written backwards, so it reads correctly when the recipient rotates the phone; paste one into a chat and see how long it takes them to notice.

Flipped names and nicknames

A flipped name makes a playful display name or a birthday shout-out. The labels show the original name and the frame used; notice how capitals change shape the most — Leo starts with a tone-bar character and Kai borrows a lowercase turned k because there is no turned capital K.

Eighteen names turned over (18)

For your own name, type it into the generator at the top and copy the Upside down row. If the result looks uneven, try it in small caps first and flip only a short word — mixed capitals are what make flipped names look messy.

Kaomoji and symbols for turning things over

The best-known upside-down kaomoji is the table flip, where a face throws a table ┻━┻ that is itself drawn upside down. It is used as a joke about losing patience, and its polite reply puts the table back: ┬─┬ノ(ಠ_ಠノ).

Where upside-down text breaks

Flipped text pastes anywhere plain text is accepted, but it behaves differently from normal words in four places.

SituationWhat happensWhy
SearchA flipped word is not found by searching the normal wordUnicode normalisation (NFKC) leaves turned letters unchanged — unlike bold letters, which fold back to plain ones
Screen readersLetters may be read by name, such as “latin small letter turned a”Each look-alike is a different character with its own name
UsernamesUsually rejected@usernames accept only a small set of plain characters; display names and bios are more permissive
Older phonesBorrowed capitals such as 𐐒 or ᗡ can show as boxesThe phone has no font containing those scripts

Phone keyboards on iOS and Android have no built-in “flip” option, which is why copy-and-paste is the practical route. If a whole message shows boxes on the other person’s phone, our guide on why fancy text does not show in some apps walks through the fixes, and the general background is in what fancy fonts really are.

Upside down, mirrored or rotated?

These three are often mixed up, and only the first one can be copied as text:

  • Upside down (this page): letters turned 180° and the order reversed — plain Unicode, pastes anywhere.
  • Mirrored: letters flipped left to right, like reading in a mirror. Only a few letters have mirrored Unicode forms (Ǝ, a reversed E, is one), so a full mirrored sentence cannot be built reliably; this generator does not offer one.
  • Rotated: the text is ordinary, but the app turns it. In Word you can place text in a text box and rotate the box; on a web page the CSS rule transform: rotate(180deg) does the same. Rotation looks perfect but disappears the moment you copy the words.

If you want text that looks disturbed rather than turned over, stacking marks above and below letters is a different effect entirely — see the zalgo text generator.

Fun ways to use flipped text

Upside down text birthday message on a phone with ideas for using flipped text
A flipped birthday message only makes sense once the phone is turned around.
  • Quiz and puzzle answers. Put the answer upside down under the question so nobody reads it by accident — the same trick printed puzzle books use.
  • Birthday and good-news messages. A flipped “happy birthday” makes the reader stop and turn their phone.
  • “Down under” jokes. Friends in Australia and New Zealand get a lot of flipped greetings; keep it light.
  • A playful display name. Short names flip best. For a name that also needs to stand out, a bold version is easier to read at a glance.

Where upside-down text works (checked 30 September 2026)

Upside-down text works in the name, bio and message fields of Instagram, WhatsApp and Discord, and usually in Free Fire and BGMI names; it fails in @usernames and on devices whose fonts lack the characters. Field rules below come from each platform’s own help pages; game fields publish no character list.

Where you pasteWorks?What to know
Instagram captions, comments, bioYesReads backwards to screen readers — keep key info plain
WhatsApp messages, About, profile nameYesNo native flip; the text is plain Unicode so it pastes as is
Discord messages, display nameYesUsernames accept only plain lowercase letters, numbers, _ and .
Free Fire / BGMI nameUsuallyMixed-block names can be refused — check the rename preview first
Search boxes and @usernamesNoFlipped letters are not the letters you searched for

If a style turns into empty boxes, the reader’s device is missing those characters — what are fancy fonts explains which blocks are safest. Free Fire and BGMI are trademarks of Garena and Krafton; FontFancy is independent of both. Questions about flipped text

How do I type upside down on my phone?

Phone keyboards cannot flip text, so type your words into the upside down text generator on this page, tap the Upside down row to copy it, and paste it into your message, bio or post.

Why do some letters not flip?

Unicode has turned versions of most lowercase letters but not of all capitals or digits. The generator uses look-alike characters from other alphabets for those, and leaves symmetric letters such as o, s, x and H unchanged.

Does upside down text work on Instagram and WhatsApp?

Yes, in captions, bios, messages and display names, because it is plain text. It will not work in an @username, and people searching for the normal word will not find the flipped version.

Is upside down text the same as mirror text?

No. Upside down text turns letters 180 degrees and reverses the order. Mirror text flips letters left to right, and most letters have no mirrored Unicode character, so it cannot be copied as reliably.

Why is my flipped text written backwards?

Because a turned line is read from the other end. The generator reverses the order on purpose so the text reads correctly once the screen is rotated.

Checked on 14 September 2026: every character name and the normalisation behaviour were verified against the Unicode Character Database; the letter mappings are taken from the FontFancy generator itself.
