Symbols for names are Unicode characters such as ♡ (White Heart Suit), ★ (Black Star) and ♛ (Black Chess Queen) that paste into an Instagram, TikTok or game display name as ordinary text. Pick a frame in the tool above to wrap your name, or copy any single symbol below — about 250 hearts, stars, crowns, arrows, music notes and check marks, each labelled with what it really is.

The frames at the top come from the same shared generator that runs on FontFancy, so the letters and the symbols stay in one copy. If you are after longer ornaments such as ꧁ ꧂ or ༺ ༻ rather than single shapes, the decorative brackets guide covers those, and the homepage keeps a broader set of decoration symbols and dividers.

Which symbol is which

Most “name symbols” are not drawings made for decoration; they are characters borrowed from card suits, chess, typography and even other alphabets. The table gives the official Unicode name of each popular shape and whether phones can switch it to a colour emoji.

Emoji behaviour is taken from the Unicode 16.0 emoji data files (emoji-data.txt and emoji-variation-sequences.txt). How a symbol finally looks still depends on the font of the phone or app.

Heart symbols

Heart symbols split into two families: single-colour text hearts such as ♡ ♥ ❥ ❦, which take the colour of the text around them, and colour emoji hearts such as 💕 💗, which look different on every phone brand. For a name, text hearts are the safer choice because they sit at the same height as letters.

Hearts that are really letters

Several of the most-copied “hearts” are letters from other writing systems that happen to look heart-shaped in common fonts. They copy and paste like any character, but a screen reader may announce them as letters, and a font that draws the letter differently will not show a heart at all.

The popular pair ᥫ᭡ is a Tai Le vowel followed by a Balinese musical sign, and ᡣ𐭩 joins a Mongolian letter to a Pahlavi letter. None of that stops them working as decoration — it just explains why they sometimes look different from one app to the next.

Why a heart turns red on some phones

A heart turns red when the character has an emoji form and the device chooses to show it. ❤ (U+2764) is one character with two presentations: followed by the invisible selector U+FE0E it asks for the plain text look, and followed by U+FE0F it asks for the colour emoji. Without either selector, each app decides for itself, and many modern phones pick the emoji.

Same code point, two looks: the selector after the heart decides which one you get.

❤️U+2764 U+FE0FRed emoji heart
♡U+2661Outline text heart everywhere — there is no emoji version
♥U+2665Usually a text heart; a few platforms show the emoji ♥️

So if you want a heart that never changes colour, use ♡ or ❥, which Unicode does not list as emoji at all. Every copy button on this page keeps the selectors exactly as they are stored, so ❤︎ pastes with its text selector attached. When a symbol shows up as an empty box instead, the device is missing the font — our guide to fancy text that is not showing goes through the fixes.

Star symbols

★ is the Black Star (U+2605) and ☆ the White Star (U+2606); both are text symbols with no emoji form, while ⭐ (U+2B50) is an emoji by default. The small four-pointed sparkles people use in bios are ✦ and ✧, and the tiny ⋆ is technically the maths Star Operator.

Crown symbols

Unicode has no text “crown” character, so the crowns used in names are chess pieces: ♛ and ♕ are the black and white chess queen, ♚ and ♔ the kings. 👑 is the only real crown, and it is a colour emoji. The ornate 🜲 you may have seen is an alchemical symbol for regulus, borrowed for its crown-like outline.

Some game names add tiny marks such as ፝֟ on top of a letter. Those are combining characters (an Ethiopic mark and a Hebrew accent) that stack above the letter before them; many name fields strip combining marks, so test before spending a rename.

Crown frames suit heavy letter styles; the gothic fraktur letters are a common pairing for clan-style names.

Arrows, music notes and check marks

These three families do a job rather than decorate: arrows point to a link in a bio, music notes mark a song or a playlist, and check marks signal something done or confirmed. All of the text versions below stay single-colour.

Arrows (35)

➳ is the White-Feathered Rightwards Arrow (U+27B3) — the “cupid” arrow — and ╰┈➤ is built from a box-drawing corner, a dashed line and an arrowhead. Curved arrows like ⤷ are handy at the start of a second bio line.

Music notes (29)

♪ is an Eighth Note (U+266A), ♫ Beamed Eighth Notes and 𝄞 the Musical Symbol G Clef, which lives in the Musical Symbols block and is missing from some older fonts.

Check marks (15)

✓ (U+2713) is text only, while ✔ (U+2714) and ☑ (U+2611) can switch to emoji and ✅ is an emoji by default. Avoid building anything that looks like a platform’s verified badge into your name — it misleads people and breaks most platforms’ rules.

Putting a symbol next to a name

A symbol reads best when it mirrors on both sides of the name, sits one space away from the letters, and matches the weight of the letter style. The twenty examples below each list the name, the letter style and the symbol family, so you can rebuild the same look with your own name in the tool at the top.

  • Count the cost. Symbols such as ♡ and ★ are one character, but 𝄞 and 𓆰♕𓆪 sit outside the Basic Multilingual Plane and count as two units each in fields that count UTF-16, so a name limit fills up faster.
  • Match the weight. Thin ☆ and ♡ suit script and italic letters; solid ★ ♛ ♥ suit bold and fraktur.
  • Keep one family. Mixing a crown, a heart and an arrow in one short name usually looks cluttered; save mixes for a bio line.

For platform-specific limits, see the Instagram fonts guide; for in-game names, the game name fonts guide covers what name fields accept, and nickname fonts collects complete styled nicknames.

Typing ♡ ★ ♛ without copying

You can type these symbols directly on a computer: Windows 10 and 11 open a symbol and emoji panel with the Windows key and the full stop, and macOS opens the Character Viewer with Control, Command and Space. In Microsoft Word, type the code point such as 2661 and press Alt+X to turn it into ♡.

On phones there is no universal shortcut; some keyboards include ♡ and ★ on a symbols page, but copying from a list like this one is the reliable route.

Questions people ask

What is the ♡ symbol called?

♡ is the White Heart Suit, code point U+2661, from the playing card suits in Unicode. It is a text symbol with no emoji version, so it keeps the colour of the text around it.

What is the ★ symbol called?

★ is the Black Star, U+2605, and ☆ is the White Star, U+2606. The yellow ⭐ is a different character, White Medium Star U+2B50, which phones show as an emoji.

How do I type ♡ on my keyboard?

On Windows press the Windows key and full stop to open the symbol panel; on a Mac press Control, Command and Space. In Word, type 2661 and press Alt+X. On a phone, copying ♡ from this page is the simplest option.

Why does my heart symbol turn into a red emoji?

Because ❤ has both a text and an emoji form and the app chose the emoji. Use ♡ or ❥, which have no emoji form, or paste ❤︎ with the text selector U+FE0E attached.

Can I use these symbols in a game name?

Often yes for simple ones like ♡ ★ ♛, but many games reject colour emoji and strip combining marks. Try the name in the rename box before confirming, since name changes can cost in-game currency.
