The tool opens on the italic styles from the FontFancy generator; switch to All 64 for every other look. Further down: how italic differs from oblique and script, ready italic captions, the letters that behave strangely, and the one thing Unicode italic cannot do — numbers.

Unicode block: Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols (U+1D400–U+1D7FF) — italic serif starts at U+1D434 (its h is borrowed from ℎ, U+210E), sans-serif italic at U+1D608, bold italic at U+1D468. There are no italic digits in Unicode.

Italic, oblique and script are different

Italic is a separately designed, slanted letterform; oblique is the upright letter simply tilted; script imitates joined handwriting. Unicode encodes true italic and script alphabets, but it has no oblique alphabet at all — a “slanted” style in any generator is really italic or script.

The single-storey 𝑎 and the looped 𝑔 are the giveaway of a true italic.

ItalicLetters are redrawn: a becomes single-storey, f gets a tail𝑎𝑓𝑓𝑜𝑔𝑎𝑡𝑜Yes — Mathematical Italic, starts at U+1D434
ObliqueThe upright letter is only slanteda slanted aNo — needs real font styling (CSS or a word processor)
ScriptLetters imitate pen strokes and loops𝒶𝒻𝒻ℴℊ𝒶𝓉ℴYes — Mathematical Script, starts at U+1D49C

This matters in practice: if you want the handwritten look rather than a slant, you are really after script, which has its own page in our cursive text generator. For heavy rather than slanted letters, the bold text generator covers the six bold alphabets, including bold italic.

Which italic for which job

Six italic-looking alphabets exist, and each sets a different tone. Each card shows a short phrase in that style and what it suits; tap a card to copy the phrase, or type your own words in the tool above and pick the same style from the Italic styles tab.

Italic captions and quote marks

Italic reads as a voice — a thought, a quote, a title — so it works best for one short line rather than a paragraph. These ready captions alternate between italic serif, italic sans and bold italic; copy one as it is or use it as a starting point.

Quotation marks to frame them (19)

Curly quotes are ordinary characters too. “ ” are the standard English pair, « » are common in French and many other languages, and ❝ ❞ are heavier ornamental quotes that suit a pull-quote in a bio.

Italic in WhatsApp, Discord and profiles

Chat apps with built-in formatting make italic without changing the letters: WhatsApp italicises text wrapped in underscores, and Discord italicises text wrapped in single asterisks. Profile names, bios and captions usually have no formatting at all, which is where Unicode italic is the only option.

Letters that behave oddly — and missing numbers

Unicode italic has three quirks. The small italic h is missing from its block, there are special dotless i and j, and there are no italic digits at all. Knowing them explains most “why does this look wrong?” moments.

QuirkWhat you getWhy
Italic small hℎ — U+210E PLANCK CONSTANTThe slot U+1D455 is empty because the physics symbol ℎ was encoded earlier; generators borrow it, so in some fonts it looks slightly different from its neighbours
Dotless i and j𝚤 U+1D6A4 · 𝚥 U+1D6A5Made for mathematics, where a dot would clash with accents; they are not used by the generator for normal words
DigitsNo italic 0–9 existUnicode only has bold, double-struck, sans-serif, sans-serif bold and monospace digits

Practical tip for numbers: because there are no italic digits, 𝑒𝑠𝑡. 2026 will always mix slanted letters with upright numbers. Either keep the year in plain digits on purpose, or switch that one line to italic sans and use the sans-serif digits 𝟤𝟢𝟤𝟨, which at least match the letter width.

Tricky italic and script letters (23)

Single characters, including the borrowed ℎ and the script letters that come from the older Letterlike Symbols block. Copy one when a single initial looks wrong after conversion.

Names in italic

A name in italic reads as signed rather than shouted. Each example below shows the style and a light frame; to use your own name, type it into the tool at the top, choose the same style and add the frame symbols. If your name only needs a softer, smaller look, small caps is another quiet option.

Kaomoji and small emoji that suit italic

Italic lines are gentle, so they pair with small, soft faces and quiet objects — books, tea, a pen — rather than loud reactions. Put one at the end of the line so the italic text stays readable.

When italic hurts readability

Use Unicode italic for a name, a title or one caption line, not for whole paragraphs. Long runs of slanted characters are slower to read, some screen readers announce each one by its Unicode name (for example “mathematical italic small a”), and search boxes that do not normalise text will not match the plain spelling. The background to all three is in what fancy fonts really are.

Where italic text works (checked 30 September 2026)

Italic text works in the name, bio and message fields of Instagram, WhatsApp and Discord, and usually in Free Fire and BGMI names; it fails in @usernames and on devices whose fonts lack the characters. Field rules below come from each platform’s own help pages; game fields publish no character list.

Where you pasteWorks?What to know
Instagram name, bio, captionsYes@username stays plain; each italic letter counts as 2 characters
WhatsApp profile name, About, messagesYesMessages also have real italic: wrap text in _underscores_
Discord display name, messagesYesMessages also have Markdown italic: *text*
Free Fire / BGMI nameUsuallyNo published character list — check the rename preview first
Old Android (before 7) and some smart TVsOften boxesFonts there lack the maths block

If a style turns into empty boxes, the reader’s device is missing those characters — what are fancy fonts explains which blocks are safest. Free Fire and BGMI are trademarks of Garena and Krafton; FontFancy is independent of both. For a different look, try the gothic text generator or the upside down text tool, or go back to FontFancy (fancy text generator) for all 64 styles.

Common questions about italic text

How do I type italic text on my phone?

Type your words into the italic text generator on this page, tap an italic style to copy it, and paste it into the app. Inside WhatsApp messages you can also wrap words in underscores, and in Discord in single asterisks, to get the app’s own italic.

Why are the numbers not italic?

Unicode has no italic digits. Bold, double-struck, sans-serif and monospace digits exist, but italic ones do not, so numbers stay upright after conversion.

Why does the italic h look slightly different?

The italic small h is borrowed from the Planck constant symbol ℎ, U+210E, because its own slot in the maths block was left empty. Some fonts draw it a little differently from the other italic letters.

Is italic the same as cursive?

No. Italic is a slanted, redrawn version of normal letters, while cursive or script imitates joined handwriting. Unicode has separate alphabets for each.

Does italic text work on Instagram?

Yes. Unicode italic pastes into Instagram bios, captions and comments. It does not work in the @username, which accepts only plain letters, numbers, dots and underscores.

How do I type in italics on my phone keyboard?

Gboard, Samsung Keyboard and the iPhone keyboard have no italic key. Inside WhatsApp you can type _text_ between underscores, or select a word and choose Italic from the menu. Anywhere else, copy an italic style from the generator on this page and paste it.

How do I italicize text on Android?

In WhatsApp and Telegram, long-press the selected text and pick Italic (on some phones it is under the three-dot menu). In apps with no formatting, such as an Instagram bio, paste Unicode italic from this page instead — it keeps its slant on any modern Android.

Checked on 14 September 2026: code points, character names and the missing italic digits were verified against the Unicode Character Database; WhatsApp and Discord formatting against their help pages.
