A monospace text generator turns your letters into fixed-width look-alikes such as ๐š–๐š˜๐š—๐š˜๐šœ๐š™๐šŠ๐šŒ๐šŽ, taken from Unicodeโ€™s Mathematical Monospace alphabet, so they paste as a typewriter or terminal look into an Instagram bio, a TikTok display name, a Discord nickname or a game tag. Type above, tap a style, paste.

The tool opens on monospace and its closest relatives; the other tabs hold every style from the FontFancy fancy text generator. What most pages skip is what this alphabet does not contain โ€” spaces, punctuation and symbols stay in their normal width โ€” and that one gap explains why neat columns in a bio fall apart.

What the monospace alphabet contains

Unicode encodes exactly 62 monospace characters: 26 capitals, 26 small letters and 10 digits, all in the Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols block. There are no monospace spaces, punctuation marks or accented letters, so a generator can only convert Aโ€“Z, aโ€“z and 0โ€“9 and must pass everything else through unchanged.

Convert the handle hello_world and you get ๐š‘๐šŽ๐š•๐š•๐š˜_๐š ๐š˜๐š›๐š•๐š โ€” ten letters change, but the underscore is still the ordinary U+005F. Each converted letter also takes more room in storage than it looks, which matters for name fields with a limit:

TextCharacters you seeUTF-16 unitsUTF-8 bytes
hello_world111111
๐š‘๐šŽ๐š•๐š•๐š˜_๐š ๐š˜๐š›๐š•๐š112141

One thing works in your favour: Unicodeโ€™s compatibility normalisation (NFKC) folds every monospace letter back to plain ASCII, so ๐š‘๐šŽ๐š•๐š•๐š˜_๐š ๐š˜๐š›๐š•๐š becomes hello_world again in any search that applies it. We cover that behaviour in more detail on the bold text generator page, because bold letters fold the same way.

Developer-style handles and terminal bios

Monospace reads as โ€œmade by someone who writes codeโ€ faster than any other style, which is why it shows up in developer bios, streamer panels and gaming tags. Lowercase with dots or underscores keeps the look clean; the prompt characters around each name below are ordinary symbols, so they survive anywhere the letters do.

Handles with a prompt or bracket (20)

Only the display name can carry these letters. An @username on Instagram or TikTok accepts plain letters, numbers, dots and underscores, so keep the real handle as plain arjun.dev and put ๐šŠ๐š›๐š“๐šž๐š—.๐š๐šŽ๐šŸ in the name field.

Multi-line terminal bios (4)

These keep their line breaks when you paste them into a bio field that allows new lines. Two spaces of indentation are ordinary spaces, so some apps may collapse them.

Chat code blocks versus monospace letters

Chat apps with message formatting already have a real monospace: backticks. Wrapping text in single backticks or triple backticks tells the app to draw ordinary letters in a code font, and that formatting only exists inside messages. Monospace Unicode letters are different characters, so they work in places with no formatting at all, such as a display name or a bio.

Chat code formatting with backticks compared with Unicode monospace letters for names and bios
Backticks format a message; Unicode monospace letters are characters you can paste into a name.
Where you typeReal code formatting?Use
WhatsApp messageYes โ€” ```text``` for monospace; newer versions also accept `inline code`Backticks in chats (details in our WhatsApp fonts guide)
Discord messageYes โ€” `inline` and ```code block```Backticks in chat; monospace letters for your server nickname
Slack messageYes โ€” backticks for inline code and code blocksBackticks
Instagram bio, TikTok name, game tagNo formattingMonospace letters from the tool above

A practical rule: if you want someone to copy a command, a code or a coupon, use backticks where the app supports them โ€” monospace Unicode letters look like code but paste as unusual characters that will not work as a real command or password.

Why monospace columns drift in a bio

Monospace letters only line up with other monospace letters. Because Unicode has no monospace space, underscore or colon, any line that mixes letters with spaces or punctuation is measured in two different widths, and a โ€œtableโ€ typed into a bio drifts out of alignment on most phones.

Monospace letters have fixed width but spaces and punctuation do not, so columns drift in a bio
The letters are fixed-width; the spaces and punctuation between them are not.

Here is the kind of layout that looks aligned while you type it and falls apart after posting โ€” the padding spaces are ordinary spaces in the appโ€™s proportional font:

Three changes keep it tidy: put each label and value on its own line instead of padding with spaces; end every line with the part that varies in length; and use a single symbol such as โ€บ or : right after the label rather than a run of spaces. Monospace digits help for scores and dates, because all ten have the same width as each other.

Typewriter captions, digits and dates

The same letters read as a typewriter rather than a terminal when the words are soft and lowercase. These captions are made for photo posts, journal-style bios and book or writing accounts.

Tech symbols, emoji and kaomoji

Prompt arrows, progress bars and barcode strips finish a monospace name without breaking the look. The symbols in the first two groups are single-colour text characters; the emoji group keeps the colour artwork of whichever phone displays it.

Monospace, fullwidth or a typewriter font?

Three different things are all called โ€œtypewriter textโ€. Unicode monospace letters paste anywhere but cover only letters and digits; fullwidth characters are wider and include punctuation; a real typewriter font such as Courier is a font file that only changes how ordinary letters are drawn in apps that let you pick a font.

Fullwidth text is the wide, spaced-out vaporwave look; if that is what you want, the wide text generator is built for it. Courier itself was designed for IBM typewriters in the 1950s, as described in Wikipediaโ€™s Courier article, and many phones draw Unicode monospace letters with a similar-looking system font. For code-style nicknames on a server, see our Discord fonts guide; for crossed-out jokes in the same terminal style, the strikethrough text page adds a line through each letter.

Questions about monospace text

How do I get monospace text to copy and paste?

Type into the monospace text generator at the top of this page and tap the Monospace style to copy it. Letters and digits become Unicode monospace characters; spaces and punctuation stay as they are.

Is monospace the same as typewriter font?

It looks similar. Unicode monospace letters are characters that paste anywhere, while a typewriter font such as Courier is a font file that only works in apps where you can choose a font.

Why is my underscore not monospace?

Unicode has no monospace underscore, dot, at sign or space. Those characters keep their normal width, which is also why columns of monospace text rarely stay aligned in a bio.

Can I use monospace letters in my Instagram username?

No. The @username accepts only plain letters, numbers, dots and underscores. Put monospace letters in the display name and keep the username plain.

Do monospace numbers exist?

Yes. Unicode has ten monospace digits, ๐Ÿถ to ๐Ÿฟ, in the range U+1D7F6 to U+1D7FF. They are in the digits group above.
