The tab opens on the gothic-leaning styles of the FontFancy generator: regular and bold Fraktur, script, double-struck and a few dark frames. Everything else on this page is about using blackletter well — which capitals trip readers up, which five letters behave differently, and when you need a real font file instead.
Unicode block: Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols — Fraktur starts at U+1D504 and bold Fraktur at U+1D56C; five capitals (ℭ ℌ ℑ ℜ ℨ) come from the older Letterlike Symbols block (U+2100–U+214F).
Gothic, blackletter, Old English or Fraktur?
All four names describe the same family of heavy, angular letters, but only one of them is what Unicode actually contains. The styled alphabet you copy from this page is Fraktur, the German branch of blackletter; “gothic” and “Old English” are the everyday names people search for.
| Name people use | What it really refers to | In Unicode? |
|---|---|---|
| Blackletter | The whole family of medieval European scripts with dense, broken strokes | No single alphabet under this name |
| Fraktur | A German blackletter style that stayed in everyday print far longer than the others (see Fraktur) | Yes — Mathematical Fraktur and Bold Fraktur |
| Old English | A popular name for blackletter-style display fonts, not the Old English language | No — you get Fraktur |
| Gothic | A general label for dark or medieval-looking lettering (in type design it can also mean plain sans-serif) | No — you get Fraktur |
Capitals that look alike
Fraktur capitals were drawn for readers who grew up with them, so several pairs are hard to tell apart today. If a name has to be read at a glance — in a game lobby or a comment — check it against this table before you commit.

| Fraktur | Fraktur | Plain letters | Tip |
|---|---|---|---|
| 𝔄 | 𝔘 | A / U | Compare the top-left stroke |
| ℑ | 𝔍 | I / J | Compare the lower tail |
| 𝔎 | ℜ | K / R | Compare the lower right leg |
| 𝔊 | 𝔖 | G / S | Compare the inner stroke |
| 𝔅 | 𝔙 | B / V | Compare the lower bowl |
| 𝔑 | 𝔘 | N / U | Compare the right stem |
| 𝔛 | 𝔜 | X / Y | Very close in many fonts |
| 𝔣 | 𝔰 | f / s | Both use a tall stem in lowercase |
A simple fix for hard-to-read names: keep the capital in bold Fraktur for impact and set the rest in a clearer style, such as 𝕭 + ʀᴀᴠᴇɴ, or use plain bold letters for the part people must read.
The five letters from a different block
Regular Fraktur is missing five capitals in the Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols block. Their positions are reserved but empty, because C, H, I, R and Z already existed as black-letter symbols in the older Letterlike Symbols block. A correct generator fills the gaps from there.
| Letter | Plain | Real code point | Empty slot in the maths block |
|---|---|---|---|
| ℭ | C | U+212D | U+1D506 |
| ℌ | H | U+210C | U+1D50B |
| ℑ | I | U+2111 | U+1D50C |
| ℜ | R | U+211C | U+1D515 |
| ℨ | Z | U+2128 | U+1D51D |
Because those five come from a different block, some fonts draw them in a slightly different size or weight, so a word like ℜ𝔞𝔳𝔢𝔫 can look uneven on one phone and perfect on another. Bold Fraktur has no gaps — all 52 letters sit in one run — which makes it the more consistent choice for names with C, H, I, R or Z. Neither Fraktur style has digits, so numbers in a gothic name stay plain or can borrow bold digits such as 𝟕. The full list of blocks each style uses is in the Unicode source table on the homepage.
Gothic alphabet to copy
Single Fraktur letters for initials, monograms and one-letter accents. The capitals ℭ ℌ ℑ ℜ ℨ in the first row are the five borrowed letters described above.

Clan tags and gothic names
Blackletter reads as old, heavy and serious, which is why it is a favourite for clan tags, guild names and dark-themed player names. A common pattern is a short bold Fraktur tag in brackets followed by the player name in regular Fraktur, so the tag stands out without shouting over the name. For more bracket shapes, see the decorative brackets for names; for length limits in specific games, see fonts for game names.

Gothic names with matching symbols (18)
Each name is paired with a symbol of similar weight: chains and rules for heavy bold Fraktur, moons and flourishes for the lighter regular style.
Check the character limit first: a bracketed tag plus a name can pass 12 characters quickly, and most Fraktur letters count as two UTF-16 units in fields that count that way.
Dark aesthetic combos
Gothic lettering pairs naturally with moons, bats, roses, candles and ornamental rules. These groups are built to sit around Fraktur text in a bio or pinned post without turning into horror imagery.

Crosses, chains and ornaments (45)
Single-colour text symbols. The crosses here are used decoratively in gothic lettering; if a cross carries religious meaning for you or your audience, pick a moon or a flourish instead.
Moons, bats and roses with emoji (22)
These mix in colour emoji such as 🦇 and 🥀, so their look changes slightly between iPhone, Android and Windows.

Tattoos, logos and print
Unicode Fraktur is only right for places where you paste text. For a tattoo stencil, a logo, a T-shirt or anything printed, a tattoo artist or designer needs an actual blackletter font file, because the shapes here are drawn by whichever font your phone happens to have and will look different on every device.

The generator is still useful as a quick preview: type the words, compare regular and bold Fraktur, and take a screenshot to show what you have in mind. The difference between styled characters and installable fonts is explained step by step in what fancy fonts are. If you want flowing letters instead of broken strokes, the cursive text generator covers script styles.
One more practical limit: Fraktur letters can show as empty boxes on older phones and in some game clients, and a few platforms strip them from names. Paste your gothic name into a note or comment first to see it on your own device.
Where gothic text works (checked 30 September 2026)
Gothic text works in the name, bio and message fields of Instagram, WhatsApp and Discord, and usually in Free Fire and BGMI names; it fails in @usernames and on devices whose fonts lack the characters. Field rules below come from each platform’s own help pages; game fields publish no character list.
| Where you paste | Works? | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Instagram name, bio, captions | Yes | @username stays plain; each Fraktur letter counts as 2 characters |
| WhatsApp profile name, About, messages | Yes | Short profile names fill up fast with 2-unit letters |
| Discord display name, messages | Yes | Usernames accept only plain lowercase letters, numbers, _ and . |
| Free Fire / BGMI clan tag or name | Usually | No published character list — check the rename preview first |
| Old Android (before 7) and some smart TVs | Often boxes | ℭ ℌ ℑ ℜ ℨ may show while the rest are boxes |
If a style turns into empty boxes, the reader’s device is missing those characters — what are fancy fonts explains which blocks are safest. Free Fire and BGMI are trademarks of Garena and Krafton; FontFancy is independent of both. For a different look, try the italic text generator or the upside down text tool, or go back to FontFancy (fancy text generator) for all 64 styles.
Gothic lettering: what people ask
How do I type in gothic letters?
Type your text into the gothic text generator at the top of this page and tap a Fraktur style to copy it. The result is made of Unicode characters, so you can paste it into bios, captions, nicknames and chats without installing anything.
Is gothic text the same as Old English font?
They look alike, but what you copy here is Unicode Fraktur, a German blackletter style. “Old English” is a common name for downloadable blackletter fonts; those need to be installed and cannot be pasted into an app.
Why do some gothic letters look different from the rest?
The capitals C, H, I, R and Z in regular Fraktur come from the Letterlike Symbols block, not the maths block the other letters use, so some fonts draw them slightly differently. Bold Fraktur uses one block for every letter and looks more even.
Are there gothic numbers to copy?
No. Unicode has no Fraktur digits. Gothic names keep plain numbers, or you can use bold digits such as 𝟕 from the bold text generator for a heavier look.
Can I use gothic text for a tattoo?
Use it only as a preview. A tattoo or logo needs a real blackletter font file so the letter shapes are fixed; Unicode Fraktur changes appearance with every device font.
Checked on 14 September 2026: code points and the five Letterlike Symbols letters were verified against the Unicode Character Database.
